Hatteras Sportfisher
Description
What made us fall in love with this 1976 53' Convertible Sportfish was that almost all the salon features are original.... and in great shape as requested by it's original owner, CNN founder Ted Turner. We are her third owner, the second owner was a doctor out of North Carolina, who cared for her as meticulously as Mr. Turner. From the gorgeous Afromosia Teak throughout to the like-new headliners, Corian countertops, etc, etc. We were fortunate to find one of the few Salon Level open concept kitchen- I hated the idea of being stuck in a below floor kitchen- I love being where the action is, talking to our guests while making dinner or cocktails. There is so much counter space.
There are three staterooms all with their own Ensuite baths. I went a little crazy decorating each room. The Master has nautical blues and yellows, the starboard stateroom has salmon and aqua blue starfish and shell patterns and the bow stateroom is more neutral- so as not to offend hardcore fishermen! It has been so great that there are showers and heads in each stateroom- this would be a great charter boat.
My husband loves it because Hatteras is still in business in New Bern, North Carolina (USA!!!!!) and willing to help him in any way they can in technical and historical support as he seeks to tenaciously restore his "baby" to original condition.
As an open water fishing boat, my husband, a lifelong fisherman, loves it for its seaworthiness and comfort even when seas pick up, not to mention the reliability of getting him and his mate of 50 years safely to and from the fishing grounds. The Hatteras is the "Cadillac Kind" of fishing boat; built like a tank- the 1976 hull is solid fiberglass- no foam.
Hatteras has built a reputation for bulletproof construction. The hulls bottom is solid fiberglass, no absorbent foam core to be found. Hatteras looks at boat building as an art, doing it better and building it stronger. The Hatteras legend began at Cape Hatteras where winds can blow almost as fiercely as hurricanes and the Diamond Shoals are home to some of the most turbulent and untamed waters in the Atlantic. Hatteras accomplished their goal to build a boat that would handle these waters and yet be friendly to the hard core fisherman. Hatteras boats are a legend; become a part of that legend.
(And he loves it because of the 34 tons of PURE ADRENALIN RUSH!!)
In 2019 we have installed a new fuel system, new batteries, new tinting on windows and window blinds in salon, new chrome control levers on bridge and tuna tower, new upholstery on knee rails in cockpit, new canvas covering over bridge, replaced all stainless steel hose clamps and hoses where needed, serviced engines and generator, repaired and restrung outriggers.
