| "KATY MARIE" is a one of a kind, custom Vinette, full displacement trawler. The hull was designed and crafted by Peterson Builders of Sturgeon Bay, Wisconsin to military specifications. Her hull is constructed of welded Core-Ten steel and she features a welded aluminum deckhouse for minimum weight aloft. The design is very reminiscent of a traditional north sea trawler...high bulwarks protect anyone going forward, high railings offer additional protection and there are exterior steps both port and starb'd that lead up to the boat deck. The raised pilothouse windows offer protection from a breaking sea as they are set up higher so as to present her formidable aluminum house to the seas. Windows are generous in size and provide plenty of interior light. Her aft walkaround design provide plenty of protection while moving about and her overhead provides protection from rain. There is a substantial swim platform integrated into the hull for easy access to the water.
Her interior layout is that of a raised pilothouse trawler with two staterooms and one head going forward. The side stateroom offers two generous over - under bunks and plenty of storage. The master stateroom is located forward and features a raised queen bed mounted on the centerline. There is abundant storage under the bed as well as as six very large drawers located to portside. There is a spacious two door closet (hanging locker) on the starb'd side. The stateroom also has a vanity - desk on the portside. The pilothouse is spacious and well equipped for serious cruising with both port and starb'd side doors, plenty of space for her electronics package, and a pilot berth raised even with the windows for the best seat in the house. Traditional woods and lighting along with bead board overheads provide a warm, salty look. This is a boat to travel upon. Stepping down four steps into her galley and saloon, one is struck by the openness of the layout. The galley offers plenty of storage areas and lots of counter spaces as well as everything a cook would desire. The saloon is open and airy, lit by large windows and features plenty of space and furniture making this a great place to relax and socialize.
She is powered by a Cummins B-210 and she currently has about 1,000 original hours. She has a Onan generator (age unknown) that is a 6.5KW unit and it was rebuilt in 2006 and has seen very little use since. "Katy Marie" was completely repainted in 2007 and new Raymarine autopilot (ST-6000), Radar and Chart plotter (C-120) were added as well. She cruises at 9 knots at 1800 RPM and WOT is 11 knots at 2350 RPM. She features a bow thruster for additional manuvering power although with her full keel she is easily handled dockside. | "Rair Ride" is a great example of a 1954 45 foot cruiser. She's about 50 foot over all, but back in the 50s they only measured what was wet. For reference the pictures show her at our 60 foot outside dock.
She has been in my care for the last 10 years. Always in fresh water on Lake Erie & always stored out of sun and weather in our boat house on our own custom full keel hoist. Hull and superstructure are of course mahogany and in excellent condition. Decks are teak and freshly protected with Sickens. Interior recently redone in 1950s style in shades of aqua and pink.
Mechanically she is powered by twin 327ci GM blocks (210 hp each) with Paragon trans. This makes her very easy to maintain and parts are a snap to come by. Uses no motor oil in an entire season. The port side trans does leak a bit, but it's very minor. The motors get her up on plane to cruise about 15 knots. Fuel consumption is roughly 29 gallons per hour at cruise. Fuel tankage is 300 gallons.
There are two heads or toilets, in the V-bunk & other is in the Master aft and is a vacu-flush unit. The main salon is air-conditioned with a window type unit exhausting to the fly bridge. There is an Kohler generator which powers all 110v nicely. Modern touches include a Garmin color map GPS unit and radar. There are also marine radio and a JVC stereo with two sets of Bose weatherproof speakers.
Main salon includes a full wet bar with sink and ice maker. Recovered hide-a-bed in salon sleeps two. Salon has custom silhouette blinds. Galley has a fridge, two burner stove, and microwave. Dinette is Formica, and cushions are recently recovered. The dinette will convert to sleep two if needed.
V-birth forward sleeps two stacked to starboard and includes sink and head. V-birth mattress cushions are recently recovered.
Stateroom aft includes two twin beds, cabinetry and full bath with shower. Aft en-suite head has shower and vacu-flush toilet.
I would not say the bilges are spotless but are very clean. She has three bilge pumps, forward middle and aft.
Includes all furnishings, electronics, full canvass, two spare props, 2 spare prop shafts, lines, etc.
Also included is a custom made 10 foot lap strake dingy of West System construction. This is hung on davits and has a 2.5 HP Nisan outboard. Just last year we stained, re-wested and varnished the dingy to match the red mahogany of the cruiser.
The only reason for selling is that we now live on the water full time and do not have a need any more for a vessel of this size. Wife wants something smaller. Kids want something faster. Guess I don't get what I want.
If you maintain this craft as we have it will not depreciate. Serious buyers can be put in direct contact with my marine carpenter who will vouch for hull condition. We also have quite a bit of documentation, paperwork and manuals which go with the boat.
She is located in Sandusky Bay Lake Erie, halfway between Cleveland and Toledo, Ohio. Personal inspections are encouraged. I would not hesitate to operate her anywhere on the Great Lakes or travel any distance.
Storage till spring or later is fine.

Topside
One of the highlights of the 459 is the expansive aft patio. Situated between the jumbo swim platform and the master stateroom is a cruisers dream deck, large enough for lounge chairs and a table. The deck also blends right into a palatial set of stairs to the aft cockpit level. The aft cockpit area presents the perfect place for a sunset meal or happy hour with its comfortable settee and ultra equipped wet bar. The bar includes a sink, ice maker and lots of storage for those boating necessities. The whole area is shaded from the sun with a massive, fiberglass hardtop, kind of like an all-weather room with a view. Wing doors lead to the wide side decks and roomy foredeck. It is easy to get around on this 459.
Layout
Stepping into the atrium like saloon will make you feel right at home. An abundance of light is supplied by giant windows that have concealed shades for when privacy is important. The dual facing lounges are inviting, especially when the recliners are available. They also provide the best location to enjoy the entertainment center and flat panel TV. The view from the settees is outstanding.
A large galley to port has lots of room for the chef to create, as well as store goods for long adventures into the blue. The galley is fully equipped with microwave, fridge with large freezer, stove and sink with inset to match the Karadon counter-top.
Overnight Accommodations
When it comes to sleeping quarters, the 459 offers two spacious staterooms. The forward berth has a queen-sized island bed accented with wraparound stairs and plenty of storage cabinets. Attached is a head and shower compartment with dual access so it can be used as the main toilet. These are true queen sized berths.
A sizeable master stateroom is all the way aft and offers a queen berth and a great view from the sliding glass door. It has an en suite head with separate vanity and shower stall.
On the bridge
Topping off this floating condominium is a large flybridge. With a high-rise view, the helm station provides everything the captain will need at his fingertips. Analog gauges are in easy view, in addition to a panel for the accessory power switches and the Raymarine multi-function display. Keeping the skipper company is a wraparound settee for the crew and a mini fridge located port. You will also find an auto pilot, radar Sea Key system, remote spot and VHF. To make life easy around the dock is a thruster system.
Power
Power is from Cummins 370 B diesels. These 355 HP engines are a reliable and economical choice. Handling is very good due to the over 14 foot beam and the thruster system controlled at the helm. There is also a generator. All of the usual systems are on board and functional. Fire control, Air, heat, hot and cold water, too many to list, but everything you would desire.
The 459 is a near perfect yacht. She offers a large amount of space both inside and out. She has great privacy. Great for families, couples or liveaboards. She handles well and is not bad on fuel.
